Makeup Academy (MUA) Lipsticks - Review + Swatches

A couple of weeks ago I went to Oxford Street in London to do some shopping and of course stopped in a Superdrug store (drugstore) and picked up a few lip goodies! I love the MUA brand and I think amongst all of the cheaper products you can really find some great steals that are definitely comparable to other drugstore brands!  In my local Superdrug I always find that the MUA lipsticks are always out of stock, does anyone else have this problem as well? Since I can never find them in stock I have always been on the hunt for them every time I set my foot into a Superdrug store and I finally found some and I managed to pick up 3 different shades which I was ecstatic about!

L-R: Shade 14, Shade 2, Shade 3, Shade 12
L-R: Shade 14, Shade 2, Shade 3, Shade 12
My MUA collection is pretty big but I had previously only owned 1 of the normal MUA lipsticks and 2 of the Matte lipsticks from MUA. For the purpose of this blog posts I will only be focusing on the normal MUA Lipsticks, but if you would like to see my blog post on the MUA Matte lipsticks you can find it here. The MUA lipsticks cost £1 each and can only be found at your local Superdrug or on the MUA website. There are 16 normal MUA lipsticks not counting the newer Matte line and offers a wide array of colours. Many of the lipsticks do not have names but instead have a shade number which they are referred to. Although this is quite annoying at least they have some way of distinguishing the colours from one another.

L-R: Shade 14, Shade 2, Shade 3, Shade 12
My pervious lipstick shade that I had owned was in Shade 14 – Bare. This colour is a very viberant orange colour.
Shade 14
The first shade that I managed to pick up was in Shade 2 which is a berry shade that almost has a purple undertone to it rather than a red undertone. It is very dark and I love paring this with a very simple eye look or even just a bold eyeliner look. I have a blog post on tips on how I do my bold eyeliner here and I also have a video showing how I apply my bold eyeliner here.

Shade 2
The second shade I picked up was in Shade 3 which is a bright hot pink colour that is also very vibrant. It is a great colour if you want to break out of your comfort zone but do not want to experiment with red lips just yet. I find that it is a very similar effect to a red lip but it is more wearable I think since it is pink based and it would look great in the Spring and Summer months!

Shade 3
The final colour I picked up was in Shade 12 and it is a sheer red/pink shade with glitters and sparkles in it. This shade really reminds me of almost a balm like texture as it does not give off much colour but it does give the lips a little pick me up, although it is not very moisturizing as a normal lip balm would be. If you do not like glittery lipsticks I would definitely steer away from this colour.

Shade 12
The formulation of these lipsticks is very creamy and only one swipe is required to get the full opaque colour. I find that many of them are very opaque apart from the Shade 3 lipstick which I would assume is supposed to be quite sheered out. I have very dry lips and I find that exfoliating the lips beforehand always makes it look a little bit better as the lipstick does not cling onto dry patches. I also find that these lipsticks give you no moisture to your lips and can actually feel quite uncomfortable if you do not pair them with a gloss on top or use a lip balm beforehand. I usually end to use my Maybelline Colour Sensational lip glosses on top to provide a moisture barrier between my lips and I don’t feel any discomfort. The lipsticks tend to last for a few hours before needing to reapply but I find that some of the darker shades e.g. Shade 2 and Shade3 almost stain my lips after a couple hours of wearing them so that when it wears off I am still left with a slight stain of colour on my lips without being patchy.

I also noticed hat on the bottom of the packaging there is a clear section that shows what colour is actually in that tube of lipstick. I thought that this was a great touch because when you tend to normally store lipsticks if there is no way of indicating which colour is which you have to open each tube to find the correct colour. But you could easily store these upside down and be able to choose the colour you would like to use. You can also unscrew this bottom section and it contains a tiny sample of actual lipstick product that you can use with a lip brush so you do not have brush lines through your lipstick or if you run out of product it should hold you over before you can purchase another tube which is great!

Extra product in the bottom compartment of the tube

Overall I think these lipsticks are definitely worth the try as they are very affordable being priced at only £1 and the pigmentation is incredible. Although these lipsticks can feel a little drying I find that if you pair them with a balm before you apply the lipstick or put a gloss over the top you will find no discomfort from wearing these lipsticks. I would recommend this to anyone who is looking for a cheap lipstick that can be comparable to higher priced drugstore brands.

    1. Very strange because mine is definitely a bright orange shade. I actually bought it online and I always wondered it they sent me the wrong one but on the packaging it says Bare - Shade 14 so I'm not sure? 100% it is bright orange though and no where near beige. Do you have any idea which shade it would be then? Thanks.

    3. Hi Natasha thanks for the reply :) I honestly don't know about that bare shade and I will probably never find out. Although I really do like the shade that I personally have! I feel like someone has gone and switched the caps of 2 of the lipsticks though which is why mine is considered bare.

    1. Do you find that it is only the lipsticks that are usually out of stock or do you find that many products are out of stock? I always find it is only the lipsticks! I am not even sure how that is possible but they must be very popular haha.

    1. I would say they are maybe the very slightest bit drying but its not honestly that bad. I have been either using a lip balm before I apply them or applying a lip gloss over the top and I don't notice any discomfort. I usually have very dry sensitive lips so some drier lipsticks very uncomfortable and almost painful but I do not have any problems with these!
