Quick, Easy, Cheap DIY Makeup Storage

A couple of days ago I thought of an idea to spice up my makeup storage and I decided to create quick, easy DIY storage ideas that won’t break the bank! I came up with 4 different ideas on how to store your makeup brushes and lip products but you could of course use these for anything, even things other than makeup! All of these DIY projects only cost me only £3 which is amazing! Of course you can use other materials to create these storage ideas such as studs, rhinestones or ribbons.

For these DIY’s I used:
  • Tape/Glue
  • Sissors
  • Small boxes that can hold lipsticks (I used a Beechams Cold/Flu medicine box)
  • A ruler or some method of measuring
  • Decorative paper to decorate the boxes
  • Anything else that your little heart desires to decorate your container :)
The first thing I decided to create was a small lipstick holder which can hold up to a maximum of 3 lipsticks. I gathered this idea from when I bought my Nyx Round Lipsticks off Ebay and the seller sent them in little boxes that held 3 lipsticks. After looking around the house I found that a similar box size/shape is a Beechams (cold medicine) box, but I'm sure that other boxes could be found around your house of a similar size that can hold 3 lipsticks. The only alteration I needed to make to the box was to cut up around an inch off the width so that it was the same size as the lipsticks inside.

To do this DIY you first want to make measurments of each side of the box and cut out squares on your paper according. You can see all of the cuts I made in the photograph below.

Then you want to carefully tape or glue the CORRECT side to the box and make sure you have your decorative paper facing upwards. If you cut all of your strips before you start taping/gluing be very careful to do the right side because while I was doing this DIY I actually messed up and taped a paper to the wrong side and I ended up having to cut a new piece.

Once all of the sides have been taped or glued, you can put your favourite lipsticks into your container. The end product should look something like this. Another great idea I thought about would be to make a couple of these box holders and actually tape them together so they would stand up right but still have separate containers. This could be used to separate different colours or brands from each other.

The next storage idea I came up with because I have a huge amount of lipsticks and could not find enough boxes to do the previous DIY so I ended up using a cotton bud (q-tip) container that I had laying around and did the same concept of wrapping it in the decorative paper. First I measured how high the container was, and make sure that you measure an inch extra so that we can clean up the edges on top of the container later.

Please when you do this next part make sure you are on a flat surface! Place the paper up to the cotton bud container and make sure the bottom of the paper is resting against the flat surface. Tape down one of the edges of the paper and continue to wrap the paper around the container. Once you reach the other side you can tape the other side down so the paper is in a cylinder shape. Don’t worry if your paper does not reach all the way around as this can be fixed by cutting out another small square big enough to cover the space and taping it over top. To secure the paper to the cotton bud container you can place a few pieces of tape connecting the paper to the bottom of the container so that it doesn't’t move around.

Now you should be left with an inch sticking up over the top of the container and the paper is stuck to the bottom of the container. Now this part is kind of confusing, but you want to cut into the top of the paper until you hit the container and make them around 1 inch wide. You can see this better in my image I have shown below.

Once the slits have been made or even if you want you can do this as you go, but you want to fold the 1 inch sections into the container and tape/glue them down. This will create create a seamless effect but you could leave this step out if you would rather just tape it around and leave it as that. The finish product will look something like this.

For the next DIY I recently bought a bottle of Tea Tree Oil and they sent it to me in this round cylinder tube and so I decided to do the same concept as before and wrap the paper around the tube to create a brush holder! I won’t bother repeating these steps as you can follow the previous DIY in this post as it is exactly the same.

Finally I decided to create another brush holder for my face brushes out of a candle holder that I found at Poundland. I am sure that you can find similar containers in your local pound shop or dollar store. This container costed me £1 and as you can see it had holes inside of it. This would be fine if you didn’t want to put any filler beads or rice inside to make your brushes stand upright but at the time I wanted filler beads so I decided to tape white pieces of paper on the inside. This would insure that the rice would stay within the container and not fall out through the little holes. I also think it looks very pretty with the white shining in through the blue container.

If you recreate any of these DIY makeup storage containers please send me a picture at bittersweetshelby1@gmail.com, I would love to see them!

    1. Thanks, You can use any containers or things laying around the house that you have that is what is so great about it! Even if you don't want to use this for makeup it is a great storage option for anything. I went to the craft store the other day and saw these little treasure chests made of wood and I thought it would be a great idea to put jewellery in :) and you could decorate it however you would like.
